PATRICK SALAVER is a short, mixed-media documentary that reexamines the life and legacy of a revolutionary activist at a time when civil rights and historical truth are under siege. Told through the eyes of his niece, Nicole Maxali, who was raised by him, the film intertwines personal loss with historical remembrance, exploring how Patrick’s activism shaped his community and the generations that followed.
As the founder of Pilipinx American Collegiate Endeavor (PACE) and a leader within the Third World Liberation Front (TWLF), Patrick Salaver helped shape the 1968-69 student strikes at San Francisco State University that led to the creation of America’s first Ethnic Studies Department. A pioneer and the first to teach Filipino American Studies, Patrick’s convictions came at a steep cost. He was sentenced to two years in federal prison for refusing to serve in the Vietnam War, even though less than 1% of resisters were imprisoned.
Through live-action footage, archival images, oral histories and animation, this film constructs a visually immersive collage of memory where past and present, personal and political, coexist. PATRICK SALAVER is about celebrating the unsung organizers, teachers, and dreamers whose activism changed the world, and reminding us that those struggles are not over. Help us share Filipino American contributions to US history, honor Patrick Salaver and reclaim the stories that shaped our world.
